Intimacy with the Night Sky

Building intimacy with the night sky is like finding a new friend or lover, especially when theres a big new toy involved! One begins to see as if one had new eyes! The world is somehow different, bigger, and more exciting. One stays up all night and is drunk tired on love during the days. There are new levels of belonging and heart opening you didn´t know you had in you, and the magic of all of this feel like an absolute blessing from the realms of the Divine.

Especially nowadays when becoming jaded and falling into despair is all too easy.

I found new intimacy with the sky world this summer, in large part because I found myself a ¨community telescope.¨ It is quite large, easy to put together and lets you see the rings of Saturn and Jupiter´s stripes…gasp…. heart flutter….!!! I took the telescope to Southern Oregon where there is minimal light pollution, and the telescope became Skopey.

In the high desert along the Mah’hah River, surrounded by sage brush and desert willow, I could lie my body on the earth´s body and see with so much more clarity, the body of the celestial spheres above and the Milky Way, that lets us know our place in the universe. I could watch as the stars move across the sky, and be present for the moment the planets emerge from the underworld and into our horizon. I could perceive the relative speed of these planets after several nights as they rose and set, and changed locations. I could see different alignments between Mars, Venus and the waning crescent moon rising in the early morning. The absolutely most beautiful sights of the natural world. Skopey let me see how Jupiter´s moons changed positions.

And Saturn´s rings.

And so much more.

All this is astrology. In fact, it´s the original shit. I imagine it was about the physical relationship between our bodies and the sky bodies. It involved more devotion, love and intimacy. The intimacy of knowing the details of the life and being intuitively connected to a lover, a child, a caregiver or friend. And this was essential to the survival of humanity, and I’m learning its essential to me feeling more whole and connected to this life.
